Why AI Isn't Increasing Productivity

Now, I should really keep my mouth shut, since I lost my job because of artificial intelligence and now I’m completely broke. But I want to say this: the bubble is there, that’s true. But you have to give productivity time to arrive - time for people to figure out how you actually get productivity out of artificial intelligence.

Give it time

The people complaining sound to me like someone saying “I’ve been on a diet for a whole week and I still weigh 130 kilos”. Or “I quit smoking last week”, while lighting up a cigarette.

It takes time, because this is not something where someone can hand you a list of use cases for artificial intelligence. What’s the use case for the internet? What’s the use case for fire? It’s huge. Everything that can be thought and done digitally, you can delegate to artificial intelligence, and you can adapt it to your own needs.

But if you don’t sit down first and understand what your needs are, how you do things and how to improve them, there is no productivity gain. You have to understand how to use it first, because it’s plastic, it’s pay-per-use, it’s on demand. It is cognition on tap. It’s a path of learning, of experimentation and above all of rethinking your activities.

Listen to the kids

Another thing: for once, listen to the young ones. All these kids aged 20, 25, 30 - because in Italy you’re still young at 40 - are doing amazing things with artificial intelligence. So instead of going to lunch at Michelin-starred restaurants and patting each other on the back among sixty-year-olds, listen to these kids. You have to sit down and study.

If you’re in a company and you need a hand with experimentation - what agents are, the difference between a model and an agent, how the agentic loop works, how skills work, how MCP works, Spec Driven Development and everything around adopting agentic AI - get in touch. That’s my corporate course, and it’s called Reskill.

One last piece of advice

One last tip for those who are just getting started and still haven’t figured out what this is all about. Don’t chase the hype too much, all this constant news, and don’t let the naysayers and the dinosaurs drag you down either.

What you need to do is try. Tinker with this stuff. If you’re not technical, start tinkering with ChatGPT or Claude online, but use the advanced features: customize them, use the connectors, build yourself some little agents, customize your prompts, start connecting these tools to your email and your calendar - and then tell me what you come up with.

Later, folks.
